When possible, the surgeons aim to remove the whole cancer tumour. Other times the tumour may have grown into other areas or organs in the body nearby and then it is harder to take everything out with the operation. Surgery is often used together with other types of cancer treatments that the patient will receive either before or after the surgery.
Sometimes the cancer has not grown to form a lump but it may have developed in the blood or lymph system. In those cases surgery would not be the right treatment option.
