My father died of cancer that had attacked most of his body. Seeing him getting worse never really made me upset until the last few days, and on the day he died I was overcome with shock for a couple of hours. Nothing felt right; whatever I did nothing was how it used to be. But once my mum started making plans I saw things more positively. When people would talk they didn't know what to say which was understandable. So I would try and make things sound more positive, which did help me get through it.
