We have two adrenal glands in our endocrine system and they sit just above our kidneys. The outside layer of the adrenal glands is called the adrenal cortex. A cancer tumour found in the adrenal cortex is known as an adrinocortical carcinoma or adrenocortical carcinoma. There are two types of cancer tumours in the adrenal cortex, functioning tumours and non functional tumours. The functioning tumours make too many hormones which can cause many different symptoms including high blood pressure, weakening of the bones and body changes such as swelling of the sex organs or a deepening of the voice. Non-functioning tumours do not make extra hormones and so it is unlikely that the above symptoms will occur.
